NHS Breathlessness Pilots

Monday 11 April 2016

The Office for Public Management (OPM) evaluated the NHS Breathlessness Pilots and revealed positive impacts on the speed and accuracy of diagnosis, more integrated working across primary and secondary care, and excellent examples of patient-centred care.

The pilots ran in three areas:

  • Ashton, Leigh and Wigan
  • Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland
  • Wessex

All three developed and implemented pathways to address patient needs holistically, adopting symptoms-based approaches to avoid the exacerbation and escalation of breathlessness.

The evaluation presents important learning for commissioners and providers, highlighting the impacts achieved, challenges experienced and key considerations for others seeking to address breathlessness.
