This checklist has been developed to help public service managers reflect on their current skills and develop those aspects that may need attention.

The questionnaire draws on the Heart of Coaching model ('The heart of coaching model: Developing a coaching model for the manager’, Coaching Psychologist, British Psychological Society, Vol 1.2 pp6-10), which draws on the GROW coaching model to offer a detailed guide for use by managers.

The GROW model, which was developed by Sir John Whitmore, is one of the best known and widely used coaching models. The model, which provides a simple yet powerful framework for navigating a route through a coaching session, is described in many coaching books and websites.

The questionnaire comprises a number of questions under each GROW heading - Goal, Reality, Options, Way Forward. We hope these will help you to think about your own practice at each phase of the coaching process. As you answer the questions in each phase, you'll be directed towards our guidance pages that include hints and tips.

As a management style, coaching equips managers to work with their staff to improve performance through taking a long-term view. To be an effective manager coach, the manager needs to blend goal-setting, problem-solving, brainstorming and action-planning skills.
