Coaching training

Thirteen councils in the West Midlands have formed a coaching consortium, and OPM is providing training, using the ILM Certificate in Leadership Mentoring and Executive Coaching .

Read more about this below.

Certificate in Leadership Mentoring and Executive Coaching

An accredited programme for managers and human resources professionals who wish to enhance their skills in coaching and mentoring.

OPM works with professionals to help them to develop their coaching skills to an advanced level and to obtain one of the UK’s few independently accredited coaching qualifications: the ILM certificate in Leadership Mentoring and Executive Coaching.

Who should attend?

This NQF 7 level programme is for managers and human resources professionals who already have some experience of coaching or mentoring and who want to develop their knowledge and practice.

Programme objectives

By the end of the programme you will:

  • Understand theories of coaching
  • Have practised your coaching skills extensively in a supportive environment
  • Have been challenged and supported to improve your performance
  • Be able to share your skills with colleagues
  • Be confident that your own coaching practice is both safe and relevant
  • Be equipped to apply for ILM membership.

Programme requirements

The programme consists of seven days working with the theory and practice of coaching and mentoring. Between sessions you will be expected to practise in your own workplace. The certificate is awarded following the successful completion of a work-based assignment, a minimum of 12 hours coaching practice and a coaching diary.

In-house programmes

We can run the programme for a number of managers within your organisation, or we can work with you to build a coaching development programme that meets your organisation’s particular needs.

For example, we are providing training to a consortium of councils in the West Midlands. A recent issue of 'Coaching at Work' reported on this, saying:
'The West Midlands Coaching Pool, formed in July by 13 local authorities, is training around 150 managers as coaches committed to delivering a total of 6,000 coaching hours a year in the region. Regional project manager Rebecca Davis said, 'The emphasis is on improving performance, giving everyone access to high quality coaching and enhancing the culture of learning across the region. ... We have had lots of interest from outside the region. One objective is to make it sustainable so it will need to grow.' This is thought to be the first scheme on such a large scale and the largest coaching training programme in one organisation. The programme is managed by the West Midlands Local Government Association and financed until 2009 by the Regional Improvement and Efficiency Partnership.' [quoted with kind permission from Liz Hall; originally published in 'Coaching at Work', Volume 2 Issue 6, Nov/Dec 2007]

Whether or not you are interested in developing such a large programme in your organisation, we can help you, either through individual coaching or by training your managers to coach others. Please phone if you'd like an initial, informal discussion of the possibilities.
