In the shadows of the super-libraries

Architecturally daring and with a price tag to match, around the country and indeed the world a new type of civic building has been appearing on many a metropolitan skyline: the ‘super library’. Residents of Newcastle, Liverpool, Southwark in London, and most recently, Birmingham, have all seen the construction of these ambitious (or ostentatious) symbols of urban prestige, which re-imagine the purpose and function of the traditional library on an impressively dramatic scale.
