Over the last six months, we at OPM have conducted various strands of research looking at the experiences of Muslim students in London. We have conducted a large scale survey of Muslims students and have received close to 700 responses. We have also carried out a comprehensive literature review and conducted in-depth interviews with experts and professionals involved in different ways in promoting and providing learning opportunities to students. Finally, we are also in the process of conducting focus groups with Muslim students

Now that the research work is nearing conclusion, the Mayor of London’s office is holding an 'open space' event looking at the experiences of Muslim students in London. The event is taking place at the GLA on Wednesday, 16th January 2008. The open space event seeks to draw together the research and involve students, policy makers, lecturers, college and university managers in identifying ways forward to improve the quality of life and outcomes for Muslim students.

Open space events are ideal for hearing and sharing the views that are most important to you. The event will be facilitated in such a way that everyone will have a chance to offer their views, suggest issues for discussion, and identify shared solutions.

We believe that this approach, alongside more structured qualitative interviewing, is ideally suited for ensuring that participants feel that they can control the agenda and are free to challenge pre-conceived views.

If you are interested in attending this event or would like to nominate someone else to attend please contact Chloe Cook at OPM.
