Making consultation real: a toolkit for health and social care

OPM has produced a consultation toolkit for health and social care organisations in Wales. It is designed to help the NHS, social services, community health councils (CHCs) and the voluntary sector work together to undertake effective and meaningful consultation with service users and carers and the wider public. The toolkit is in the form of an accessible, interactive PDF which can be downloaded here. [Note the large file size, 2MB].

We undertake much work supporting patient and public involvement and conducting market analyses to support this. Furthermore, we specialise in large-scale consultation events that bring together key stakeholders to develop fit-for-purpose solutions to challenges facing the sector.

Patient and public involvement

We help health and social care organisations to understand the needs, demands and experiences of service users. We work to enable agencies to take a strategic approach to planning and delivering services in a patient-centred, outcomes-focused way. We strive to ensure that this is underpinned by the development of the strong links necessary to facilitate sustained user involvement across local communities.

Involving people in health       This paper considers how public involvement in information about performance can be harnessed to improve the quality and public accountability of health services. It draws on discussions with eighteen user organisations and a small group of heart patients about the publication and use of performance data. The paper was published by The Nuffield Trust for whom OPM undertook the research. It is also available, along with other Nuffield papers at www.nuffieldtrust.org.uk

Market analysis

By synthesising a range of datasets and supplementing this with in-depth analysis of both the policy and local area context, we are able to equip clients with the necessary evidence-base to be able to respond quickly and effectively to the changing needs and demands of the health and social care market.

Consultation events

By developing large-scale engagement activities that incorporate a range of qualitative tools and techniques, we enable people with vastly different experiences of the health and social care system to feed back on their services and contribute to new planning. This allows organisations to build an evidence base on which to base service development.
